Amy Roberts, Clarinet and alto & tenor saxes

Amy Roberts joined the Big Chris Barber Band in January 2011.

From West Cornwall, Amy, who is just into her twenties, has already played all over the UK and abroad at clubs and prestigious jazz festivals. She is becoming well known on the British jazz circuit as an exciting performer on saxophone, clarinet and flute, and regularly appears as a guest with top bands. She is also as a competent leader of her own youthful, dynamic band featuring some of the most exciting young musicians on the jazz scene.

Amy is currently a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, where she studies classical saxophone with Rob Buckland and Andy Scott, and plays with the RNCM Big Band under the direction of Mike Hall. For her final year of study at the RNCM, Amy is absolutely delighted to have been awarded the Martyn Edwards Jazz Bursary. She was proud to have been part of the 2010 Best of Young Jazz Project as a mentor for young people in the Worcestershire area. During the scheme Amy worked alongside the phenomenal bass player and educator Steve Berry to inspire and teach the students taking part in the Academy. Amy was voted winner of the Rising Star Category in the British Jazz Awards 2009 and came 2nd in the same category in the 2010 awards!

Music: Amy has not yet recorded with the Big Chris Barber Band (January 2011).
